Quick answer: if you only have a few hours, Frederiksted Beach is right next to the pier, and Rainbow Beach is a short taxi ride north. With more time, the West End has some of the island’s calmest, clearest water.
Within walking distance
Frederiksted Beach runs along the waterfront next to town. It’s an easy walk from the ship, and you can snorkel around the pier pilings — a well-known spot for marine life. Always follow posted rules and stay clear of the pier while ships are docked or maneuvering.
A short taxi ride
- Rainbow Beach — just north of town, calm water, with food and drinks nearby.
- Sprat Hall Beach — further up the West End coast, usually quieter.
- Sandy Point — a stunning, protected wildlife refuge south of town. Opening days are limited (often weekends only) and it can close for sea-turtle nesting season, so check with the US Fish & Wildlife Service before you go.
Worth the drive (if you have most of the day)
Cane Bay on the North Shore is famous for its reef wall, a swim from the beach — but it’s a longer drive, so watch the clock and your ship’s all-aboard time.
Cruise-day tips
- Agree on a taxi fare before you get in — fares are usually per person.
- Bring cash in small bills, reef-safe sunscreen and water.
- Leave a buffer: aim to be back at the pier well before all-aboard.
